APPROACHES

The Great Rob Quinlan Climbing Late Season Ice On The South Fork

The approaches in Cody can range from moderate to climbing hand over hand loose steep kittly litter slopes. The climbs are not far relative to mileage, it's the elevation gain that hurts. There are few to no trails, which makes approaching climbs an adventure. Fortunately most of the time you can see the climb from your car and then begin your trek, however, the approaches can easily kick your butt. Approaches can be lengthy averaging 1 1/2 to 2 hours so be sure to leave early in the morning. There are some that may only take 15 minutes depending on your abilities. The greatest thing about climbing in Cody is that once you reach the climb the ice is usually untouched and there are no lines to wait in. Many of the routes in Cody are only climbed a handfull of times in a season, mainly because there are so many climbs and so few people.

Make sure not to cut across private property. Respect the ranchers that live on the South Fork, they have been in the valley much longer than any of us. We are trying to improve relations between the ranchers and ice climbers, so be responsible and respectful.

When the first pitch is not in you must find another way to gett to the pitches above! Mark Taking a rest on the South Fork trail after us getting shutdown on the Needle

Climbing on Carter mountain in the middle of winter can make for interesting approaches

Don't stress the sheep or any other wildlife. The South Fork is wintering ground for many animals, especially the sheep. Don't try to get as close as you can to get a picture or harass them. If they are in your path just try and walk around them, remember you are on their land. Stressing the sheep in the valley is a concern for wildlife officials so respect the wildlife now and we wont have access issues in the future!
